Housing:
We have a volunteer cabin located on the edge of a jungle on a private farm just a skip from
one of our nesting beaches. You will be housed with 1 to 5 other people male and female. Each cabin has a
bathroom and a modestly furnished kitchen (you supply your own food, NO ALCOHOL allowed!). Bring your own
towels and sheets for a twin bed. Each person will have their own bed. Usually men will sleep in one room and women
in another. Some people like to sleep with a mosquito net. If you think you may want to you will need to supply your
own (suggested).
Food: Volunteers are responsible for their own food. There
is a small fridge and hot plate for cooking. If you have a favorite kitchen item, knife, french press etc. feel free to bring
it. If you want we can arrange 2 meals a day at local reasturants for $20. This will need to be pre-arranged. Intern and Volunteer duties
will include: Daily monitoring and data collection, camouflaging, relocating and reclaiming marine turtle
nests, habitat restoration, school presentations and community outreach. School presentations take place until December 15th
and then resume again February 18th. College and University credits may be arranged. Prior sea turtle experience, science background,
psychology, first aid, and Spanish/English are all handy but not necessary. Due to the inherent dangers physical
requirements of field research we suggest applicants are fit, not bothered by insects, and able to work outside at night in
challenging conditions. We have a no drug or alcohol policy. If you think you cannot abstain from alcohol or drugs
while volunteering with our program please don't apply. The release form at bottom of page must be signed and
returned before any volunteer will be allowed to participate in any activity. Participants are responsible for their flights,
transportation, intern fee and personal welfare. Must have proof & copy of current health insurance. List of items and etiquette
required for fieldwork: · Red filtered headlight (hands need
to be free). Back up headlamp highly suggested. Petzl’s are highly recommended. This is one of your most
important peices of equipment, spend the extra $ for a Tac Tika Petzl (about $45). · Batteries, battery powered
alarm clock, watch, Research and management techniques for the conservation of sea turtles (manual),
proof of insurance. · Light weight, dark, long-sleeved shirt and pants (Patagonia
silk weight shirts rock for this). · Closed toed shoes/sandals. Keen’s are
good. · Note pads and pencil/pen to take data. · No flashes from cameras on the beach. · No
bug spray. · Good attitudes a Must!!! · Handheld
radio, not required but great for communications -- STANDARD HORIZON -- FLOATING HX850S To get the "Research and Management
Techniques for the Conservation of Sea Turtles" manual go to the following website and you can download
and print out this manual or contact them and order one. Allow 4 weeks for snail mail. http://iucn-mtsg.org/publications/techniques-manual-en/
This
manual is required for everyone! Please obtain a hardcopy several weeks before coming to Costa Rica and read
thoroughly. Understanding the material will help prepare you for fieldwork and will continue to be a valuable asset while
working with the project and beyond. A basic understanding of the material will be expected. It's a good read
anyway for anyone interested in sea turtle conservation! Past Volunteers:
